Paige Phillips' Bobby Orr chair makes mark in Parry Sound

For the last four years,adidas Artemi Panarin jersey, Paige Phillips has been donating her time and boundless talent to help the Parry Sound Downtown Business Association raise funds through its paddle and chair silent auction.

“I met Paige when she painted a chair for us in 2014 – her chair was amazing,adidas Seth Jones jersey,” said Susan Hrycyna, DBA executive administrator. “The next year she offered to paint five paddles for me – one of the paddles I gave her was an old oar that had been donated – and this became the Bobby Orr paddle; as well she painted four paddles of various scenes around Parry Sound.”

The “Orr Oar” became famous in and around Parry Sound,adidas Scott Hartnell jersey, with Phillips commissioned to recreate the paddle design for Bobby Orr fans.

In 2016, the Huntsville Forrester, Phillips became a reporter with the North Star’s sister paper,Authentic Scott Hartnell jersey, and once again offered to paint four paddles.

This year, Hrycyna asked Phillips if she would be interested in painting a Bobby Orr-themed Muskoka chair.

“I thought it would be a fun challenge,” Phillips said. “I didn’t want to do anything simple like a jersey, but wanted to incorporate the Boston colours as much as possible. I decided to go with a black base for the chair – to resemble the black hockey pants – and went with a white top with the black and gold stripes on the chair arms and along the bottom of the back piece to resemble a white Boston jersey.”

Phillips spent hours researching photos online to bring her photo collage vision on the chair to life.

“It was important to include photos that would represent a wholesome picture of his career. I settled on a younger photo of Orr,adidas Ryan Hartman jersey,adidas Patrick Roy jersey, wrapping his arms around the Stanley Cup as my anchor piece with two smaller photos of Orr positioned on either side – one of Orr while playing for Team Canada and another of him wearing his traditional Boston jersey.”

” Phillips said. “I was pretty concerned with how the piece was going to come out,“The chair took me 18 days to complete – the Stanley Cup alone took me five hours. I couldn’t be happier with the finished product,adidas Gabriel Landeskog jersey, considering that portions of the images were going to be missing depending on where they fell on the chair slats … I really enjoy doing portraits because of the challenge they provide, but a face truly comes to life under my paint brush, whether it be people or animals. “Paige is a huge supporter of the DBA and is always willing to support this event; many of our local artists are the same. Every year I approach the Rutke Artist Group and almost every one of them paints a paddle or chair for me. The silent auction is truly a community event and wouldn’t happen without the generosity of our local artists.”
