MANILA Mike Hughes Camo Jersey , Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Philippine President Aquino assured the public Tuesday that there would be sufficient supply of rice despite the recent devastation from typhoon Koppu (Local name: Lando) and the anticipated more severe onslaught of the El Nino.

The president, during the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) Forum held at the Solaire Resort and Casino, said government had initially approved the 500,000 metric tons of rice importation and it is now considering increasing the amount after several agricultural lands in Northern and Central Luzon had been flooded and damaged following Koppu.

Aquino said the initially approved importation was to cushion the impact of the El Nino on the rice supply.

He said the flooding caused by Koppu made the problem more severe.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) had warned the severe El Nino would lead to a drought that would be felt by at least 79 provinces that could last up to the early part of 2016.

PAGASA said drought is defined as three consecutive months of way below normal rainfall condition or 60 percent reduction from average rainfall.

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Indian army has claimed it foiled infiltration bids at two different places on Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir.

The infiltration attempts, as per Indian army officials, have been blocked at Uri sector of frontier Baramulla district and Nowgam sector of Kupwara in the northwest of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Indian army officials said on Tuesday that a trooper was killed fighting infiltrators in Nowgam sector.

""Today our alert troops foiled infiltration attempts at Uri and Nowgam sectors on LoC,"" an official said. ""Operations at both places are going on and one of our soldiers was martyred in Nowgam fighting the militants.""

India's semi-official news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) reported 10 infiltrators were killed in Uri. However, Srinagar based Indian army spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia denied to confirm the killings.

""A group of 10 to 12 heavily armed infiltrators tried to infiltrate deep in our territory, but their attempt was foiled,"" Kalia told Xinhua. ""The operation is ongoing. We are collecting details and so far we don't have information about the killing of infiltrators.""

The infiltration attempts came two days after four gunmen stormed an Indian army base in Uri, killing 18 troopers and wounding over 20 others. The attack, considered to be deadliest in recent past in the restive region, has heightened tensions in India with some Indian politicians and retired military officials demanding a strong reaction.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.

Currently, Indian-controlled Kashmir is grappling with violent unrest. The region has been witnessing the largest anti-India protests - in recent years- since July 8, following the killing of a militant commander in a gunfight with Indian troops.

Authorities have imposed curfew and restrictions to contain street protests, and the region is observing a complete shutdown. Clashes between civilian protesters and government forces have so far resulted in killing of more than 80 people, mostly young men and children, besides injuries to thousands of others.

PARIS, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has awarded the UNESCO Medal on Space Science to first Chinese national sent to space, Yang Liwei, and three other prominent international space practitioners during the first edition of the award ceremony.

The ceremony was held on Friday evening at UNESCO's Headquarters in Paris.

The three other scientific laureates of the 2017 edition are Valentina Tereshkova, the Russian cosmonaut and first woman in space, Arnaldo Tamayo Mendez, the first Cuban in space, and Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata, the first Japanese commander of International Space Station (ISS).

"I thank you all for your courage and commitment," said Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, to the laureates. "And I end with an appeal, for you to continue on your scientific journey, and also to return to UNESCO as often as possible, to reach out to younger generations, to share UNESCO's message to build peace in the minds of men and women."

Unable to attend the ceremony himself, Yang Liwei was represented by Shen Yang, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the People's Republic of China to UNESCO at the ceremony.

In a message delivered by Shen on his behalf, Yang Liwei recalled October 2003 when the world witnessed the success of China's first manned space mission that opened a new era of China's manned space program and made contributions to the human exploration into the unknown.

The Chinese astronaut noted that out of China's collaboration with the United Nations, a UN flag boarded the Shenzhou 5 aircraft during the 2003 space mission, a sign that has shown Chinese people's willingness to use the outer space for peaceful purposes and in the benefit of all mankind and demonstrated China's support to the UN's mission and principles.

"In the future, we are willing to work together with all countries and regions that are committed to the peaceful use of outer space, with an aim to contribute more to the promotion of scientific progress and peace and development of the world," he said.

The UNESCO Medal on Space Science, established on June 29, 2017 is awarded by the UNESCO director-general to honor prominent scientists, public figures and organizations for their contributions to the development of space.
