Former Lyons kicker Jake Elliott became an unlikely celebrity by simply doing his job.
The Western Springs native entered the national spotlight after drilling a 61-yard field goal as time expired in the Philadelphia Eagles' 27-24 victory against the New York Giants on Sept. 24.
In the second game of his pro career,womens Kareem Jackson Jersey,, Elliott kicked the seventh-longest field goal in NFL history — and the longest in team history — to beat a division rival.
Elliott was a fifth-round draft pick out of Memphis by the Cincinnati Bengals. The Eagles signed him off the Bengals' practice squad Sept. 12 after placing Caleb Sturgis (hip) on injured reserve.
Elliott was a tennis and soccer standout at Lyons before giving football a try at the insistence of coach Kurt Weinberg. He went on to break records at Memphis and graduate as the Tigers' all-time leading scorer.
Elliott said his stunning kick was a culmination of years of hard work.
